The Conversation reports on the privacy concerns surrounding purchasing marijuana online once it is made legal. Canadian e-commerce platform Shopify will be the only avenue to purchase marijuana until retail shops open in 2019. The company will have to comply with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act; however, privacy concerns come into play should any information be transferred to the United States. Should U.S. security agencies receive the data related to marijuana sales, Canadian citizens could face problems crossing the border. Shopify has yet to announce any specifics for protecting information from potential data breaches.
