The Guardian reports privacy advocates are seeking more transparency and protections around searches of Australian travelers mobile devices when they re-enter the country. Provisions in the Customs Act allow Australian Border Force to obtain phone passcodes from travelers and search through documents and photos on devices. An ABF spokesperson said these searches "protect the Australian community from harm," while Digital Rights Watch's Samantha Floreani, CIPM, believes ABF's practices are "a prime example of the kind of privacy violations that can occur when you don’t have fundamental human rights."
