The Wall Street Journal reports Meta proposed charging EU users for ad-free services to address alleged EU General Data Protection Regulation violations concerning personalized advertising. Meta made the pitch to EU privacy and competition regulators, putting individual and bundle fees on ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram. Before the pitch, Meta considered offering EU users an opt-in consent mechanism for receiving targeted ads.
