The European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs determined in an opinion the use of blockchain must respect data subjects’ rights under the EU General Data Protection Regulation, Out-Law.com reports. The committee found blockchain has the potential to be used in innovative ways; however, it can also clash with different aspects of the GDPR, particularly around data minimization principles and the right to erasure. The LIBE Committee recommends the European Data Protection Board develop “guidelines and recommendations” to help businesses comply with the GDPR when they use blockchain technology.
