The Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center has complied with ransom demands, paying 40 bitcoins, or nearly $17,000, after hackers corrupted and disabled the hospital’s network — using what is also known as “ransomware” — more than a week ago, NPR reports. "The quickest and most efficient way to restore our systems and administrative functions was to pay the ransom and obtain the decryption key," said hospital CEO Allen Stefanek. "In the best interest of restoring normal operations, we did this.” The incident is still under investigation, but neither “law enforcement nor the hospital gave any indication of who might have been behind the attack or whether there are any suspects.”
