Germany’s Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information welcomed the Court of Justice of the European Union's ruling on data retention. The CJEU reaffirmed data retention “enables deep insights into the personality of each individual, up to the creation of personal networks and profiles of individuals.” According to the BfDI, data retention is not required for “effective criminal prosecution on the internet.”
