The U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced it has reached settlements with five companies for allegations they falsely claimed to be certified under the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield agreement. DCR Workforce, Thru and 214 Technologies all claimed on their websites they were Privacy Shield certified. LotaData also claimed it was a participant of the Swiss-U.S. Privacy Shield agreement, in addition to the EU framework. EmpiriStat falsely claimed its Privacy Shield status after it allowed its certification to lapse last year. The five companies are no longer allowed to misrepresent their participation in any privacy program sponsored by the government and must comply with FTC reporting requirements as part of the proposed settlements.
