The U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced it has given final approval to settlements with four companies for false claims of certification under the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield agreement. The FTC accused IDmission, mResource, SmartStart Employment Screening and VenPath of misrepresenting their Privacy Shield compliance. SmartStart, VenPath and mResource allowed their certifications to lapse but continued to tout their Privacy Shield compliance on their websites. The FTC found IDmission never completed the process to certify under Privacy Shield but still said it followed the agreement on its own website. As part of the settlement, the four companies can no longer misrepresent their participation in any government-sponsored privacy or data security program and must meet FTC reporting requirements.
