  • The U.S. Federal Trade Commission adopted a policy statement committing to "combatting unfair or deceptive acts and practices related to the collection and use of consumers' biometric information and the marketing and use of biometric information technologies" and warning that certain uses or claims regarding biometric data may violate the FTC Act. Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said the statement "makes clear that companies must comply with the law regardless of the technology they are using."
  • The FTC is also seeking comments on proposed amendments to the Health Breach Notification Rule that clarify its applicability to health apps and evolving technologies not covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Levine said the proposed amendments will allow the rule to "keep up with marketplace trends, and respond to developments and changes in technology."
