The U.S. Federal Communication Commission issued a notice of proposed rulemaking 28 Sept. to reassert its authority over broadband internet and regulate for "protection of consumers’ privacy and data security interests." The notice would allow the FCC to classify the internet as a telecommunications service under Title II of the Communications Act. The proposed rulemaking package would also restore privacy and data security enforcement powers previously bestowed upon the FCC in the Telecommunications Act of 1996.
