Privacy concerns surrounding facial-recognition technology are growing, but regulation efforts have hit an impasse as Western governments embrace the technology and activities in Washington have stalled legislation restricting its use by federal agencies, Politico reports. As a result, where and how facial recognition is used is under the control of technology companies that have supplied facial-recognition systems to police and government agencies and have embedded it in devices. “In both the U.S. and Europe, the stuttering progress of efforts to regulate facial recognition stems from a blend of reluctance by security-obsessed governments and setbacks that have stymied lawmakers’ focus,” the report states.
