New York’s Lockport Central School District has implemented facial-recognition technology, raising objections from civil rights advocates, the Associated Press reports. School officials say the system can alert staff to individuals who pose a threat, including sex offenders and suspended staff. The New York Civil Liberties Union, in a letter to Interim Education Commissioner Shannon Tahoe seeking to stop use of the technology, said it infringes on students’ rights “Because every face that is detected in the frame will be analyzed and compared to entries on the Hot List, anyone who walks through areas captured by the surveillance cameras will be entered into the facial recognition system, including students.”
