The New York Times reports engineers at Google and Facebook created tools several years ago that they claim could recognize and name any face, but have yet to release them. During an internal meeting in 2021, Meta Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth said face recognition technology with the ability to identify an individual at a dinner party, for example, was "hugely controversial" and widespread access to it was "a debate we need to have with the public."
