Euractiv reports the European Commission plans to introduce measures mandating online messaging services to perform scans for "Child Sexual Abuse Material." According to the draft proposal, CSAM scanning technologies must be "effective" and "suitably reliable" while avoiding collection of "any other information from the relevant communications than the information strictly necessary to detect." The proposal also includes required risk assessments and the creation of the EU Centre on Child Sexual Abuse. Editor's note: The IAPP wrote about Apple's initial plans for CSAM scans in August 2021.
