The European Data Protection Board released a statement saying EU data protection authorities have noted the European Commission’s intent to investigate the consolidation of consumers’ personal data following the planned Apple-Shazam deal. The EDPB states it is essential to consider the data protection rights of consumers whenever a major merger is proposed, adding independent DPAs are well suited to handle such an inquiry. “This assessment, as well as the identification of conditions or remedies for mitigating negative impacts on privacy and other freedoms, may be separate to and independent from, or integrated into, the analysis carried out by competition authorities during their assessment under competition law,” the EDPB statement reads.
