A review of 175 websites by the Dutch data protection authority, Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, found almost half that use cookies are incorrectly requesting permission to do so. The DPA has sent letters to the website operators requesting necessary changes and will investigate whether cookies are used lawfully. “Tracking cookies usually process personal data. If companies want to follow people with tracking cookies, they must first request permission in a legally valid manner,” the DPA’s release states, adding website visitors must give permission with “an unambiguous and active action.” (Original article is in Dutch.)
