Researchers have identified security flaws in the GEDmatch ancestry database that could pose a security risk for DNA data, MIT Technology Review reports. The flaws in the GEDmatch service “not only risk exposing people’s genetic health information but could let an adversary such as China or Russia create a powerful biometric database useful for identifying nearly any American from a DNA sample,” according to the report. Using specially designed GEDmatch DNA profiles, a team of professors and security researchers was able to run searches and guess more than 90% of other users' DNA data.
