The Verge reports that a recent decision from research lab OpenAI to limit the release of a new algorithm over concerns of potential “malicious applications” has sparked controversy in the artificial intelligence community. The text-generation algorithm named GPT-2 has the ability to produce text without comprehension, leading OpenAI to fear that it could be used to create “misleading news articles” or automate spam and abuse. As a result, the lab released a “much smaller” version of the algorithm. Researchers have criticized the decision to withhold the algorithm as one that creates “mass hysteria” about AI.
