Attorney Maja Smoltczyk has been elected as the new Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, replacing Alexander Dix, who has been serving since 2005, attorneys from Squire Patton Boggs report in a Lexology update. Before her appointment, Smoltczyk served as a research assistant at the European Parliament and has been an official in the higher public administration of Berlin. According to the Lexology update, “She considers her task to be defending the right to informational self-determination in a period of major societal changes.” The commissioner’s office released a more detailed press release on the newly elected DPA (in German).
