The Guardian reports Australian consumer group CHOICE conducted research revealing retailers Bunnings, Kmart and The Good Guys use facial recognition with the aim of halting theft cases. The rights group found the three companies' deployments in an examination of 25 organizations. CHOICE Consumer Data Advocate Kate Bower labeled the facial recognition use "inappropriate and unnecessary" while noting "discreet signage and online privacy policies are not nearly enough to adequately inform shoppers."
