The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and Australian Communications and Media Authority are investigating a data breach that affected 10 million Optus cellular customers, Reuters reports. The OAIC said it will investigate the company’s data protection efforts and compliance with privacy laws, while the ACMA is investigating whether its maintenance and disposal of personal data meets industry obligations. The OAIC said civil penalties of up to AU$2.2 million could be levied if Australian privacy law was breached.
