Australian police said the hacker who stole data from 10 million Optus’ cellular customers concealed their “identity, actions and whereabouts,” The Washington Post reports. Government officials attributed the hack to “lax cybersecurity at Optus,” which is the nation’s second-largest telecommunications provider. Cybersecurity Minister Clare O’Neil called the attack “quite a basic hack,” and added the parent company, Singapore’s Singtel, “effectively left the window open for data of this nature to be stolen.” Investigators said they were prioritizing protecting the identities of 10,000 customers, whose data had been loaded to the dark web in an extortion effort.
