An Australian Competition and Consumer Commission report recommends the country create an office to examine how tech companies, such as Facebook and Google, use algorithms to send targeted ads, Reuters reports. Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg accepted the ACCC’s “overriding conclusion that there is a need for reform,” adding the Australian government intends to “lift the veil” on the algorithms the tech companies use to gather and monetize user data. The office would be a branch of the ACCC and was one of 23 recommendations made by the agency in its report, which also included calls for enhanced privacy laws and protections for news media.
