Artificial intelligence, facial recognition and data protection are among the top European trends identified by Euractiv for 2020. As part of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s plan to enact new rules on AI, Euractiv reports a “roadmap” will be released as part of the announcement rather than a “tightly defined strategy.” While France’s data protection authority, the CNIL, has questioned the legality of facial recognition technology, President Emmanuel Macron still touts the benefits of the “Alicem” ID program. As for data protection, the EU awaits to see whether a new draft of the proposed ePrivacy Regulation will come from the Croatian Presidency, while European Data Protection Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiórowski is expected to publish recommendations for the improvement of data rights throughout the year.
