In a letter to global “policy makers, data protection authorities, and providers,” a group of privacy advocates argued the shift to distance learning due to COVID-19 threatens students’ privacy, MediaPost reports. The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, Electronic Privacy Information Center, Public Knowledge, Defend digital me and others stated companies should not use data from students under 18 for commercial purposes. The effects of data tracking and targeting “may be lasting” and impede a child’s development, according to the letter.
