The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission initiated federal court proceedings against Facebook for misleading customers when promoting a software application it claimed would keep users’ personal data private. The ACCC alleges Facebook subsidiary Onavo Protect “collected, aggregated and used significant amounts of users’ personal activity data for Facebook’s commercial benefit,” according to a release. ACCC Chair Rod Sims said consumers were deprived “of the opportunity to make an informed choice about the collection and use of their personal activity data.”
