In an article for The Wire, Vrinda Bhandari reports that the introduction of the Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2018 came as a surprise to many. While Bhandari notes that the bill addresses many of the recommendations made by the Justice B.N. Srikrishna committee, it failed to offer public or stakeholder consultation, running contrary to the government’s pre-legislative consultative policy. Also noted is that the bill fails to recognize a recommendation from the committee that “it is thus critical that these changes [amendments to the Aadhaar Act] be made hand-in-hand with a new data protection legislation.” Recent reports show that the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2018 is likely to be introduced after general elections finish in June.
