Recent input from Italy’s data protection authority, the Garante, on cookie paywalls opens a new chapter in the never-ending story of profiling cookies. Ughi e Nunziante Partner Massimiliano Pappalardo, CIPP/E, said the statement that cookie paywalls are not forbidden “opens new scenarios on a core issue in the current data protection landscape: the monetization of personal data.” There is uncertainty around what criteria would make cookie paywalls fully compliant with the EU’s legal framework, Pappalardo wrote, and an official position from the European Data Protection Board could help.
