The Australian Institute of Company Directors looks at the tougher penalties that may be incorporated into the Privacy Act 1988. One possible course of action may be the introduction of a private right of action to give consumers the right to seek compensation for alleged breaches of the Privacy Act. The Attorney General’s Department was given $1.7 million to conduct a review of the act, which is expected to be finished by 2021. Pieces of legislation to implement new penalties are expected to be introduced this year.
