VP - Associate General Counsel - Lead Privacy Lawyer, MetLife, New York, NY

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the senior attorney designated to lead the provision of legal services for cross-border privacy matters across the enterprise.
  • Develop and ensure consistent positions on privacy issues on enterprise matters.
  • Identify privacy risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate with US counsel on multi-jurisdictional initiatives.
  • Manage intake of projects and balance workloads among the practice group lawyers and support the development of their skills and legal expertise (Note that initially the position will have subject matter supervisory responsibilities, but not Human Resource responsibilities).
  • Create frameworks and repositories for regional expertise to be established for practice group lawyers.
  • Maintain awareness of new developments in the law and identify trends in the regions and countries where MetLife has business.
  • Develop legal processes and approval protocols where appropriate for data privacy in support of enterprise strategy and initiatives. 
  • Provide legal advice to Compliance, including the Data Privacy Office, in its development and monitoring of compliance with corporate policies and procedures regarding data privacy.
  • Engage in the onboarding and roll-out of new technologies across the enterprise as well as reviewing modifications to existing technologies to ensure technologies are used within the bounds of data privacy laws globally. 
  • Interface directly with GTO’s governance bodies that approve the funding, roll out and expansion of enterprise technologies at various stages.
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to senior management, relevant company boards, and business units in all areas and activities relating to data privacy laws globally. 
  • Promote active knowledge sharing of data privacy legal advice and issues across privacy professionals throughout the enterprise.
  • Partner with Compliance to develop education programs to heighten awareness within the enterprise of the impact of global data privacy laws on the use of global technologies.
  • Communicate frequently with Law Department management on issues and progress of matters in order to maintain effectiveness and to coordinate with those working on other matters.
  • Work with, guide, and manage outside counsel for MetLife on matters, to the extent they are engaged on those matters.
  • Keep business partners and colleagues apprised of relevant issues, developments and preventative law measures in privacy.
  • Provide feedback to Unit Manager on members of the practice group, for the purposes of the performance management cycle

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills

The successful candidate should:

  • Have 15+ years of legal experience, preferably with substantial in-house corporate experience.
  • Have demonstrable expertise and experience in the area of data privacy law in the financial services industry, preferably involving significant cross-border issues.
  • Have established and/or managed a team of data privacy lawyers.
  • Have familiarity with technology issues and law.
  • Have experience in leading teams remotely and balancing workloads.
  • Possess exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively develop and manage various relationships; effectively influence; and develop others via mentoring, coaching and feedback.
  • Exhibit crisp, clear oral and written communication skills; in particular, the ability to reduce legal issues to straightforward practical analysis and advice.
  • Have experience in dealing with regulators (e.g., the Information Commissioners Office).
  • Hold a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. 
  • Be admitted to the New York State (or other appropriate) bar.
  • Possess excellent academic credentials.
  • Exhibit good business acumen and familiarity with the market and regulatory landscape affecting global financial services companies.
  • Balance competing demands and multiple deadline-sensitive matters; help assess business priorities.
  • Follow through to ensure advice is acted upon, and that ethical, legal and business issues are raised to appropriate levels.
