Privacy Counsel, Sony Corporation of America, New York, NY

Responsibilities – Global

  • Provide privacy legal advice to Sony Corporation’s Global Information Security & Privacy organization, headed by Sony’s Chief Information Security Officer
  • Evaluate privacy legal issues associated with proposed information security monitoring tools
  • Lead the Global Privacy Strategy Team to advise on global privacy legal strategy, drive a unified approach to privacy issues, coordinate legal advice, and provide recommendations on best practices, trends, and legal requirements
  • Gather and share updates from regional Point Legal Officers on significant legal developments
  • Provide input on proposed global information security and privacy policies, standards, and other requirements
  • Support cross-company global projects involving personal information

Responsibilities – Operating Company

  • Provide privacy legal advice (both global and US) and work with the SCA Privacy Officer to implement privacy policies and processes for SCA and certain of its subsidiaries. This includes:
    • Counseling company representatives at multiple locations on privacy compliance
    • Providing privacy input on business projects and initiatives
    • Advising on customer and employee privacy issues
    • Drafting data transfer agreements
    • Drafting data protection notices, website privacy policies and related procedures, and reviewing Data Protection Authority filings
    • Reviewing the implementation of information security tools in terms of privacy legal compliance, and helping local company colleagues work with works councils and Data Protection Officers
  • Support GDPR implementation
  • Assist in data breach response (including evaluating notification requirements)
  • Keep current on privacy law developments

Qualifications

  • A J.D. degree and membership in good standing in the New York bar. (Non-New York attorneys are not necessarily ineligible to perform legal work for the Company, but would be required to register as an in-house counsel with the State Bar of New York.)
  • Minimum of 8 years of related legal experience in a top law firm or corporate environment
  • In-house experience in a multinational corporation preferred
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of privacy law, including US privacy law, European data protection law, data transfer law, privacy laws as they relate to cybersecurity, and the use of monitoring tools
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent judgment and analytical skills
  • Ability to assess risk strategically and help clients find solutions that enable them to mitigate risk while achieving their goals
  • Program/project management skills, including the ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects
  • The strong leadership and interpersonal skills necessary to build relationships and manage teams within SCA and across the Sony Group
