What You'll Do

We have an exciting opportunity for junior/mid-level privacy lawyer to join the Data Protection & Privacy Legal team reporting to the Global Data Protection & Privacy Counsel. In this role, you will deliver counseling and legal advice to Cisco’s Product Counsel, Offer Enablement, Security & Trust Organization, and Government Affairs teams and drive thought leadership and compliance with global privacy laws, Cisco policies and standards, and customer requirements.

Who You'll Work With

You will take a lead role in working our Chief Privacy Office to advise engineering and product development teams on incorporating privacy by design/drafting creative answers for privacy risks, conducting privacy impact assessments, and devising remediation strategies. You will also work closely with the Data Protection Program Office to drive compliance monitoring and enforcement capabilities and activities. As a Cisco Privacy Counsel, you will have the opportunity to work with a dynamic, cross-functional and experienced team on privacy issues impacting Cisco’s products and businesses around the world.  You'll work directly with other attorneys, HR, business and operations leads, and engineering teams to design creative privacy solutions and compliance practices for our products and internal operations.  You will also collaborate with our Government Affairs team in influencing legislation and industry standards related to data protection, privacy, and cybersecurity.

Who You Are
You will provide legal counsel on all aspects of domestic and international laws and regulations concerning privacy, data protection, and cybersecurity. You will also advise on privacy by design/default, build creative solutions to address privacy risks, conduct privacy impact assessments, and devise cost-effective, efficient remediation strategies in line with corporate risk tolerance. You will support data protection and privacy compliance monitoring and enforcement activities. Researching, tracking, and turning regulations and enforcement trends into practical, actionable advice are additional duties for this role. In addition, you will resolve escalated deal negotiations and customer inquiries related to privacy.

The minimum qualifications we are looking for are:

  • Strong academic credentials;
  • Licensed to practice law in a jurisdiction where Cisco does business;
  • At least 3 years of expertise in global data protection, privacy, and/or security law and practice, external certification (CIPP/E/US/A, CISM, CISA, CISSP, etc.) and/or prior product counseling experience a plus;
  • Sound business discernment, flexibility, and appreciation for risk tolerance and stabilizing opposing interests, priorities, and timelines;
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, prioritize, and resolve legal issues efficiently and effectively;
  • Comfortable with gray areas where no clear answer has been established and providing an explanation and defense of the position taken;
  • Appreciation for new and emerging technology, and ability to become conversant with Cisco’s offering portfolio; and
  • Willingness and desire to learn.
