Federal officials and experts met on Wednesday at a workshop held by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to “focus on the advancement of privacy engineering as a basis for the development of technical standards and best practices” for privacy and civil liberties protection. “In order to get technical solutions,” said National Security Council Cybersecurity Director Ari Schwartz, “we need to move to a more fact-based approach.” NIST Senior Policy Advisor Naomi Lefkovitz said the workshop will result in a NIST Interagency Report to help determine whether to add privacy controls to an overall cybersecurity framework, Fierce Government IT reports. MITRE’s Stuart Shapiro also said in order to make privacy controls a possibility, the privacy field should be cautious about the metrics that are adopted.
