MIT Technology Review reports that a new Facebook artificial intelligence (AI) research group says the company’s facial verification software has made improvements to match faces nearly as well as humans can. A human will generally match two unfamiliar photos of the same person correctly 97.53 percent of the time. Facebook’s new DeepFace software now scores a correct match 97.25 percent of the time, the report states. “You normally don’t see that sort of improvement,” said Yaniv Taigman of Facebook’s AI research group. DeepFace remains solely a research project for now, and Facebook released a report on the technology last week in anticipation of the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition this June “to get feedback from the research community,” said Taigman.
