In what interim Privacy Commissioner Chantal Bernier called a “humbling” experience, the federal commissioner’s office suffered a data breach when employees, in March, lost an unencrypted hard drive “containing the private information of past and current employees” in the process of moving headquarters to Gatineau, Quebec, from Ottawa. The results of an internal investigation of the matter, which affects roughly 800 people, will be delivered today. The information, dating back to 2002, includes names, salaries, ID numbers and more. Bernier was notified April 10 that the drive contained PII. Current employees and members of government were notified of the breach April 17, but Bernier said she hasn’t issued a public release on the breach because they are still in the process of notifying affected ex-employees.
