The Federal Trade Commission has reached two settlements over online privacy complaints, The Washington Post reports. The commission said children's social networking site Skid-e-kids' violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by making deceptive claims in its privacy policy about its data collection and by allowing children under the age of 13 to register for the site without parental consent, which is forbidden by COPPA. The site's operator has agreed to destroy all illegally collected information, link educational material for users online and hire a privacy professional--or face a $100,000 fine. The commission has also settled with online advertiser ScanScout for using Flash cookies to track users despite claims that users could opt out. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
