About a half dozen lawsuits have been filed in U.S. District Court over the past two months against companies that create advertising technology, alleging they violated federal law by creating tools that "essentially hack into users' machines without their knowledge," The Wall Street Journal reports. Privacy advocates are concerned that if enough data is collected over time, advertisers will be able to create detailed profiles of users. The tools cited in the suits are part of an "arms race" in tracking technologies, according to Chris Hoofnagle of the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology's information-privacy programs. "There are some in the industry who do not believe that users should be able to block tracking, so they are turning to increasingly sophisticated tools to track people."
