U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Mike Turner, R-Ohio, released several proposals aimed at extending Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, The Associated Press reports. Turner proposed enhanced penalties for intelligence officials abusing their authority, the ability for Congress to mandate an inspector general review alleged violations and allow a "limited" number of FBI supervisors to authorize Section 702 search queries. However, Turner's proposals did not include a general search warrant requirement to review electronic communications in the Section 702 database. Editor's note: The IAPP's Alex LaCasse reported on the Government Surveillance Reform Act.
