Apple, Google and Microsoft announced their support for a common passkey standard created by the Fast IDentity Online Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium, Courthouse News Service reports. The FIDO Alliance passkey standard would eliminate users’ need to log in to websites and applications using passwords, and instead would rely on fingerprint or facial image scans. Google would begin implementing FIDO technology across Chrome, ChromeOS, Android and other platforms. All three companies have committed to allowing users to use their biometric passkey automatically on devices without having to re-enroll accounts.
