In an op-ed for Slate, Tufts Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy Cybersecurity Policy Assistant Professor Josephine Wolff describes Zappos’ proposed data breach settlement — which provides the 24 million customers whose personal information was exposed during a 2012 breach a 10% off code for one order — as “paltry.” “It’s an astonishing step backward in data breach settlements and a disheartening reminder of how easy it is for major companies to still walk away from data breaches with minimal consequences,” she writes. The settlement, submitted in September, has received preliminary approval and is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.
