In big privacy enforcement news, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts has agreed to settle with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over charges it unfairly exposed hundreds of thousands of consumers’ payment card information. The settlement will require Wyndham to establish a “comprehensive information security program” and to undergo an annual information security audit while maintaining “safeguards in connections to its franchisees’ servers,” an FTC press release states. “This settlement marks the end of a significant case in the FTC’s efforts to protect consumers from the harm caused by unreasonable data security,” said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. “Not only will it provide important protection to consumers, but the court rulings in the case have affirmed the vital role the FTC plays in this important area.” Editor’s Note: Find all of the case’s history in the IAPP's FTC Casebook.
