In an op-ed for The Washington Post, MIT’s Daniel Weitzner chimes in on the encryption debate, opining that the way forward “is not by building increasingly intrusive surveillance tools with back doors everywhere, but to show there is a genuine human rights framework that protects Internet users from unjustified and unchecked surveillance.” Last week, Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board Chairman David Medine also argued that the choice between security and liberty is a false choice. Former Defense Intelligence Agency Deputy Director David Shedd argues that Presidential Policy Directive 28 is a dangerous move by President Barack Obama, hurting intelligence data-gathering abilities, and Eric Siegel contends that bulk surveillance can help discover terrorists while protecting privacy.
