Pew Research Center and Elon University's Imagining the Internet Center polled 1,233 people on whether online trust will grow or decrease over the next 10 years. The survey comes as cyberattacks and data breaches continue, and trust in governments, the media, schools, and churches wanes. Of the respondents, 48 percent said online trust will be strengthened, 28 percent said trust will stay the same, and 24 percent said trust will be diminished over the next decade. According to the report, six themes on online trust emerged, such as trust will be strengthened due to improvements in online systems, blockchain’s potential to improve online trust, and trust diminishing due to a vulnerable internet, and powerful forces threatening individuals’ rights.
