Bloomberg Business reports on the burgeoning connected car industry and moves by the “world’s three biggest makers of luxury cars” to tap into the “gold mine” of personal data in an ecosystem that does not as yet have clear rules of the road. BMW, Volkswagen AG and Daimler AG have all expressed interest in collecting driver data but have said they’re committed to protecting it and complying with regulations, the report states. However, some regulators are on high alert, particularly in Europe. The Bavarian DPA’s Manfred Ilgenfritz said, “We are emphasizing Privacy by Design” to minimize the amount of data collected, and the French DPA, the CNIL, is also working with carmakers on privacy issues.
