In a column for The Washington Post, George Will writes that privacy concerns are threatening valuable census data. The recent IRS and NSA scandals have prompted some to distrust the American Community Survey (ACS), and although “instinctive suspicion of government…is healthy,” Will argues, “the ACS should not become collateral damage.” Will notes that making the survey voluntary would cause compliance to “plummet” and “the cost of gathering the information would soar.” He also says the ACS provides valuable data for economic growth and can improve the efficiency of markets and the government.
