Just as a recent report found that nearly half small- and mid-sized U.K. businesses suffered a data breach in 2017, an article for Motherboard reports that while there is incentive for cybercriminals to get creative, there is not a compelling incentive for many corporations to put in the same effort in combating cyberattacks. A 2018 Cost of a Data Breach Study from the Ponemon Institute and IBM found that the global average cost of a data breach is $3.86 million. Larry Ponemon, chairman of the research firm, said that figure can equate to a “rounding error” for some and added, “The company spends more money buying coffee for its office workers.” Despite arguing the reputational damage to a company is a risk worth considering, trust studies conducted by Ponemon also found that markets tend to forget quickly, and consumers do so even faster.
