The White House is examining options as it considers a potential federal approach to online data privacy, Axios reports. Sources close to the White House said an executive order having federal agencies develop a privacy framework could be an avenue, potentially leading to the National Institute of Standards and Technology to work with industry professionals on guidelines, while also launching public-private partnerships to create voluntary best practices. National Economic Council Special Assistant Gail Slater has spoken with Dean Garfield, the CEO of the Information Technology Industry Council representing tech companies such as Apple and Facebook, on the EU General Data Protection Regulation and the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield agreement.
