In an op-ed for The Brookings Institution, former Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler writes that the U.S. needs to catch up to the European Union as the General Data Protection Regulation goes into effect. While U.S. citizens experience some of the effects from the GDPR, Wheeler writes the U.S. government has largely ignored privacy issues, which was made worse by the repeal of the FCC’s net neutrality rules. He adds, the GDPR has increased importance as the amount of personal data collected by organizations grows. “The EU has broken the inertia, and it is time for the U.S. government to move from a laggard to a leader in the protection of the personal privacy of its citizens,” Wheeler writes.
