WhatsApp will enable users to create an encrypted backup of messages shared on the platform and stored on Apple’s iCloud or Google Drive, The Wall Street Journal reports. The feature will be available in a software update this month. “If you save a copy of your messages, with Apple or Google, (you) save it in a way where they have no way to read it,” WhatsApp Head Will Cathcart said. Stanford Internet Observatory Research Scholar Riana Pfefferkorn said the update could keep messages, including images, private if a users’ cloud account is compromised.
