Politico reports WhatsApp could face fines up to 50 million euros for alleged violations of the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Ireland's Data Protection Commission found the messaging application failed to adhere to the transparency requirements under the GDPR. The penalty is currently under consultation with other data protection authorities in the EU after the Irish DPC submitted its findings to the DPAs in December. A final decision is not expected until later this year, which may include a requirement for WhatsApp to change its data practices.
